The late American actor and playwright Matthew Cowles was born in New York City, USA, on 28 September 1944, meaning that Libra was his zodiac sign. Alfie studied at Windlesham House School prior to moving on to St John’s College, at which he was mostly into playing sports and appearing in school plays. He matriculated in 2005 and then enrolled at Fine Arts College, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2009.

Roles in movies

Alfie’s debut film role was playing Arundel’s Son in the hit 1998 biographical historical drama “Elizabeth”, which starred Liz Giles and Cate Blanchett, and was directed by Shekhar Kapur. It follows the life of Queen Elizabeth I of England as she’s learning about monarchy, and the movie won 34 of its 89 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Make-up.

Some of Alfie’s following roles were in the 1998 comedy “You Are Here”, the 2003 music video “David Guetta vs. Bowie: Just for One Day (Heroes)” and the 2004 action adventure comedy “Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London”. The year 2005 saw him play Harry in the biographical musical “Stoned”, which starred Paddy Considine and Leo Gregory, and was directed by Stephen Woolley. It covers the death of Rolling Stones’ co-founder Brian Jones, and the film was nominated for four awards. Some of Alfie’s roles in the remainder of the 2000s were in the 2006 biographical comedy “Sixty Six”, the 2007 romantic mystery “Atonement”, and the 2008 drama “Flashbacks of a Fool”.

In 2014, he played Iosef Tarasov in the critically acclaimed crime thriller action “John Wick”, which starred Keanu Reeves, and was directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. It follows a former assassin whose dog’s just been killed, and the film won five of its 15 award nominations.

Some of Alfie’s most recent film roles have been in the comedy “La Cha Cha”, the crime action “Night Teeth” and the short science fiction “Nightwalkers”, all released in 2021.

Roles in TV series

Alfie played Skateboard Kid in the 1999 episode “Ends” of the action comedy “Spaced”, and his following roles came in 2005, when cast to appear in an episode of both the drama mini-series “The Golden Hour” and the crime mini-series “Jericho”.

In 2008, he starred as Nobby Clark in four episodes of the historical mini-series “Casualty 1907”, which also starred Neil Fitzmaurice and Nicholas Farrell, and follows the doctors and nurses working at an Edwardian London hospital. Also in 2008, Alfie played Adams in the episode “And Kill Them” of the drama “Coming Up”, and the year 2010 saw him appear in an episode of the drama “Moving On” and the crime mystery “Accused”.

In 2016, he starred as Ringwood in all the seven episodes of the popular drama mini-series “Close to the Enemy”, which also starred August Diehl and Lucy Ward, and follows a British intelligence officer who has to make sure that a captured German scientist helps the Brits develop jet aircraft; the mini-series was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Alfie’s also known for playing Isaac Pincher in five episodes of the popular drama “Harlots”, which starred Kate Fleetwood and Lesley Manville, and was created by Moira Buffini and Alison Newman; it follows brothel owner Margaret Wells as she’s raising her daughters in 18th century London.

Some of Alfie’s most recent TV series roles have been in four episodes of the 2020 biographical crime mini-series “The Murders at White House Farm”, four episodes of the 2022 action thriller “Rogue Heroes” and the 2023 episode “Missed Connection” of the animated action adventure “Transformers: Earthspark” (voice role).

Alfie also won a 2021 CinEuphoria Award for Best Ensemble – International Competition, for his and his colleagues’ performance in “Jojo Rabbit”.

Even though Alfie avoids speaking about his love life in public, there are still three women whom he’s dated, that we know about.

Sometime in the first half of the 2000s, he dated British non-celebrity Iona Elizabeth; the two were together for around a year.

From 2007 through 2010, Alfie was in a relationship with Jaime Margaret Winstone, a British actress with 58 credits to her name, while she’s perhaps known best for playing Pamela in the 2018 action adventure fantasy movie “Tomb Raider”.

Alfie was in a relationship with British disc jockey Allie Teilz from 2017 through 2019, and she gave birth to their daughter Arrow on 22 October 2018; even though he and Allie are no longer together, it’s believed that they’re equally involved in raising their daughter.
